The term “hosting” does not describe a particular service, but a number of services that offer different functions to a domain. Having a website and emails, for instance, are two separate services even though in the general case they come together, so most people consider them as one single service. In fact, each domain has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, which defines where the site for the domain address is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that deals with the emails for the domain address. For instance, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record would be mx1.domain.com. Each time you open a website or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain name has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the browser request or the e-mail will be forwarded to the correct server. The reasoning behind working with separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you can have your site hosted by one provider and the e-mail messages by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Shared Hosting

If you have a shared hosting account from our company and you want to move either your website or your e-mails to an alternative provider, it'll take you literally simply 2 clicks to do so. Our Hepsia Control Panel comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you will be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the standard 2, it's not going to take more than a few clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the bigger the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you modify or create isn't going to take more than a few hours and if required, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which indicates how long a record will stay active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Accessing and editing the A or MX records for each of your domains or subdomains is incredibly easy if you acquire a semi-dedicated server plan from us. The accounts are managed through our in-house built Hepsia CP, which features a section dedicated to the DNS records of your domains. The latter will be listed alphabetically and you can click on any of them to see both the A and the MX records. Changing any record will be as easy as typing in the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even if you have never dealt with such matters before, you won't encounter any issues if you want to switch your website or emails to another company while keeping the second service with our company. When needed, you could also set up additional MX records and set a certain priority based on the recommendations of the new provider.
